Paul Thomas Anderson's Cigarettes & Coffee

Today /Film has a new segment of "Big Director Small Film" where they spotlight a big time director and post a video of an earlier project before they were huge.

This week's was Paul Thomas Anderson's Cigarettes & Coffee. It stars Phillip Baker Hall (someone who would become a regular with PTA; Magnolia, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights) and Miguel Ferrer. Cigarettes & Coffee is the story including 5 other people at a diner on the outskirts of Las Vegas and all the stories are connected to each other.

It premiered at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival and was well received by the panel, he eventually turned into a full feature titled Hard Eight which features John C. Reilly, Samuel Jackson and Phillip Baker Hall. However, PTA was completely unsatisfied with the way Hard Eight turned out, but then went on to turn another one of his short stories into a full feature with the Dirk Diggler Story into Boogie Nights.
